Edward  Moore – Chair, West Kerry Fishing Representative

Edward is a native of Dingle, Co. Kerry and Owner Skipper of the MFV Misty Dawn T539.  He has been fishing for the last 35 years having started his career on the family’s fishing vessels MFV Bridget T29 and MFV Purple Harvest before buying his first vessel MFV Noreen Bawn WT105 in 1986.  He fishes a range of inshore species including: potting for brown crab, lobster, and spider crab; dredging for scallop; gillnetting, trammel netting and tangle netting for crayfish.

He has been actively representing the interests of inshore fishermen locally and nationally through his role as a founding member of Comharchumainn Gleamaigh Chorca Dhuibhne when it existed and the Chumainn Gleamaigh Chorca Dhuibhne since 2008.  He was also previously a member of the Crab Species Advisory Group.

Alex Crowley  – Vice Chair South Kerry Fishing Representative

Alex, a native of Cahersiveen, Co. Kerry and is the owner skipper of MFV Emma Lou T450.  He gained a range of experience working abroad a variety of vessels in the South West working his way from deckhand to Chief Engineer.  After this Alex took the plunge and bought his first vessel MFV Sweetwaters T450 which he fishing from Cahersiveen until he upgraded to MFV Emma Lou in 2007.  He fishes a range of inshore species including: potting for brown crab, lobster, and spider crab; gillnetting, trammel netting and tangle netting for crayfish.

Alex has been involved in both the Iveragh Fisherman’s Co-op and the Valentia Harbour Fisheries Society since he began fishing from Cahersiveen.  He has extensive experience serving on both boards of management and is currently honorary secretary of Iveragh Fisherman’s co-op .  He was appointed as a representative of the inshore sector to the Working Group on Safety Training and Employment in the Irish Fishing Industry by Minister Coveney.

Seamus O’Grady – North Kerry Fishing Representative and SW FLAG Member

Seamus is a native of Kilshannig, Castlegregory, Co. Kerry and is the owner of MFV JBC.  He has a long career fishing lobster, spider crab, crayfish and salmon

He is a member of Northwest Kerry Shellfish Co-operative and holds a position on the board of Tralee Oyster Fishery Society.  Seamus was nominated as their representative to SW Fisheries Local Action group where he has participated actively.

Kieran Healy – Cork fishing Representative

Kieran fishes out of Crosshaven, Co. Cork and is the owner skipper of the MFV Susan Maria C219.

He has been fishing since 1978, apart from a four year period spent fishing out of San Pedro California (trolling for albacore and salmon and drift netting for Swordfish).  He currently fishes pots, lines and nets targeting, lobster, shrimp, brown, crab, spider crab, Pollock, codling/cod, ling, ray and coley seasonally.

He has extensive experience of inshore fisheries and was a founder member of the Irish Lobster Association which was at the forefront of initiatives to introduce management and conservation for lobster and crayfish stocks.

Frank Fleming – SW FLAG Representative

Sector: Processors

Frank lives in Schull in West Cork. He has been a commercial fisherman and fishing vessel owner for 26 years and is familiar with all aspects of the Irish fishing industry. He is one of the founding members of the “Responsible Irish Fish” label. He is a director of the Irish South and West Fish Producers Organisation. He has been involved in the development of the BIM Seafood Environmental Management System for the Irish catching sector for the last six years and also represents the SW FLAG on the SW RIFF.

 Kevin O’Donovan  – Cork Fishing Representative

Kevin is a native of Ring, Co. Cork and is the Skipper owner of MFV  Carol-Anne S442 P .  He has a long career fishing lobster, Shrimp, velvet crab, spider crab, and crayfish.

He is a member of West Cork Lobster Association and was nominated by this group which is actively involved in lobster conservation through its active role in the national V notching programme.

James Orpen –  Cork fishing/ Island Representative

James a native of Bere Island, Co. Cork but has fished extensively all around the coast.  He the owner skipper of the MFV Stephanie I.  He currently fishes a range of inshore species including: potting for brown crab, lobster, prawns, Shrimp and trawling for herring and sprat.

James has been involved in Bere Island Co-op, the Castletownbere Fisherman’s Co-op and IFPO as a director.  He also has extensive experience as both a member of the Celtic Sea Herring Fishery and serving on the Celtic sea herring management board.

Richard Murphy – Cork Fishing Representative

Richard is based in Castletownbere, Co. Cork. He has had  a 35 year career in the seafood industry with very strong ties to the inshore sector.  He is the owner of the MFV Ryan Dean S266 and MFV The Three Brothers S390 while he is co-owner of the MFV Celtic Dawn I C315.  He is also a founder member of Shellfish De La Mer.  He has extensive experience through involvement with Beara Inshore Fishermen’s Association, industry collaborations on the BIM SW Brown Tagging & Data Collection Project  and the Bantry Bay Pot Fishery  for Prawn in addition to submission on various consultations including those on Garnish Inshore mackerel gillnet fishery, Inshore Area VII BSA crab fishery, shrimp and lobster.

Sector: Environment

Kevin is a native of Dingle, Co. Kerry and is founder of Dingle Oceanworld Aquarium. His contribution to marine biology, for which he was recently awarded a MSc by University College Cork in recognition of his work in the field, is well documented. His understanding of environmental and fisheries legislation has expert foundation from his work with the SFPA. His early career in the fishing industry coupled with his enthusiasm for environmental issues give him a unique insight.

Joseph Lynch

Sector: Marine Tourism/ Leisure

Joe runs a sea angling charter business with his licensed vessel Wreckhunter, a Wildcat 107 Catamaran with 12 passenger capacity, from Crosshaven, Co. Cork. He was nominated by the Irish Charter Skippers Associations which represents licensed sea angling/passenger vessel skippers and has over 80 members all around Ireland. Joe is a former Naval Officer with 23 years’ experience, and Sea Angling for the last 19 years.  He serves as Secretary on the committee of the ICSA.

Joe’s experience of over 42 years at sea provides him with a good understanding of the issues facing the inshore sector and fisheries management.
