The South East RIFF is currently consolidating its membership due to several vacancies arising from a renewal process being undertaken by all RIFFs including replacing seats from members that have stepped down. Vacancies have now arisen in the following areas/sectors:
|Location seat||Principal Geographical area covered||Key species/fisheries covered by representative||No. of seats|
|1. South Co. Wicklow||Centred around Arklow harbour||Whelk||1|
|2. East Co. Wexford||Carnsore Point to Kilmichael point||Whelk||1|
|3. East Co. Waterford||Dunmore East/Waterford Estuary to Dunebrattin||Lobster, crab, shrimp||1|
|4. West Co. Waterford||West of Dunebrattin to Youghal Bridge||Lobster, crab, shrimp||1|
|5. Full RIFF Area||All 3 counties||Scallop||1|
Using the Fleet register of 13.09.2019 all vessel owners in the South East RIFF geographical region have been written to detailing the geographical areas and fisheries in which replacements are required. Applications are invited from people who are interested in representing their area and the fishers in it. Applications must be made on the formal application form and returned to the RIFF secretariat before the date specified on the letter (04th October 2019).
Once the applications are received, the RIFF secretariat will write to all registered vessel owners to inform them of those offering to represent them and how they propose to communicate the work of the RIFF with fishers. A mandate form will also be provided to allow them to indicate their preferred candidate. In order to be successful a candidate must have 66% or majority of the fleet register mandate to gain the seat on the SE RIFF.
For those who are interested in representing the fishers in their area they will need to demonstrate the following:
- their ability to represent the views of the inshore sector,
- their knowledge of inshore fisheries, fish stocks, and fishing methods,
- their knowledge of relevant environmental legislation and
- their capacity to engage on fisheries and environmental management issues.
In appointing fisheries RIFF members, each RIFF must strive to make the membership representative of the RIFF’s region’s geographical coverage and the characteristics of the region’s inshore fleet and fisheries.
To be eligible a candidate must represent the inshore fishers within both the stated geographical area and for the accompanying stated key species. A fisheries candidate to be eligible to the SE RIFF must also be financially dependent on a registered inshore fishing boat within that sector/fishery and geographical area.
Note: To be eligible for nomination for the Scallop seat, a candidate must be able to provide evidence of participation (financially dependent on a less than 12 metre vessel) fishing scallop in the south east coastal inshore area within at least one of the last 3 years (2017 to 2019 inclusive) by way of SFPA Gatherers documents or EU log sheets.
